What happened

Council members asked the district to pause.

Parents used the council's open-comment hour on September 17 to ask Boulder's leaders to weigh in before BVSD voted on September 22.

Council members then asked what the closures would mean for Boulder, and asked the district for a pause.

Asked whether city staff had assessed what the plan means for Boulder's land-use plans and for families.

Read her letter to BVSD, titled Plea for a pause. The city's new comprehensive plan centers on neighborhoods, neighborhood schools hold them together, and parents are asking the district to pause.

Has had to close schools before and knows the disruption. A pause gives time to consider alternatives; she will send her own letter; lingering questions about basic issues are a concern.

Why it matters

Boulder's own leaders are asking for what families are asking for.

Most of the plan lands in Boulder. Three of the four schools it would close, Flatirons, Mesa and Douglass, serve Boulder neighborhoods, and both relocations are in Boulder.

The city plans around neighborhoods. Winer's letter points to Boulder's new comprehensive plan, which centers on neighborhoods, and calls neighborhood schools part of what holds them together.

It's the coalition's ask. Not “never close a school.” Pause, answer the basic questions, then decide.

Where it stands

Answer the questions. Hear the neighborhoods. Then decide.

BVSD approved the plan 5–2 on September 22. Parents have taken the process to court.
